It was a song that really brought his career as a solo artist to a climax. The Thriller album really now is classic because it’s so much apart of our culture. Most people are at least aware of "Billie Jean" "Beat It" and "Thriller and can identify those songs as being Michael Jackson songs. After he performed Billie Jean at Motown 25 in March of 1983, Michael became a legend.
So love him or hate him, love that song or hate that song, it is a classic.

Both the fact that it is a great song and the fact that there was nothing else like it being played on the radio at the time. Add a great and catchy new way to dance (Moonwalk) and the song took off.
It happened again in the 90’s with "Macarena" but the song lyrics were not as intelligent.

The novelty of the music video, the clothes that he wore, and heavy rotation on Mtv during its golden era cemented it as a big hit.

It was the first music video that actually had a plot to it. Prior to Billie Jean music videos were just blah. Billie Jean revolutionized music videos. Also, the song itself was innovative and Michael’s performance of it during the Motown 25th Anniversary was what sky rocketed his career. (the first time he ever did the moonwalk)

Because it told a story. Todays songs dont tell a real story. You could tell what he was trying to say. And its original, with a unique beat and rhythm. Even though the song is over 20 years old, ppl still love it. Not many songs stay with you like that
